6th Week of Pregnancy
A tiny heartbeat that means the world
Your baby’s face is developing
Something remarkable happens in the 6th week of pregnancy: your baby is growing rapidly and is beginning to take on a human form. Although you may not be able to see any changes from the outside yet, a great deal is already happening inside your womb. The tiny being inside you now measures around 4 to 6 millimetres, roughly the size of a single sequin on a dress or a small press stud on a baby bodysuit.
Your baby’s development
This week, your baby still resembles a tiny, curved seahorse, but cell specialisation is progressing very quickly:
- The face: Small indentations are forming, which will later develop into the eyes and nostrils. The early structures of the ears and lower jaw are also becoming visible.
- The limbs: Tiny buds are appearing on the sides of the body. These will develop into arms and legs over the coming weeks.
- The heart: It is now beating strongly and rapidly, at around 100 to 160 beats per minute. This is almost twice as fast as your own pulse.
Your body in the 6th week of pregnancy
This week, pregnancy symptoms reach their first peak for many women. The level of the hormone hCG continues to rise, which often leads to increased nausea. Many pregnant women also notice a metallic taste in their mouth or a heightened sense of smell.
You may also find that you need to urinate more frequently. This is because your kidneys are working more efficiently to filter waste products from both your bloodstream and your baby’s. In addition, your growing womb is beginning to place slight pressure on your bladder.
Our well-being tip for you
As your skin is receiving an increased blood supply due to hormonal changes, it may become prone to blemishes or dryness. Consider using mild, natural skincare products without artificial fragrances. A short walk in the fresh air can help ease feelings of fatigue and support steady circulation.
Your guide to the 6th week of pregnancy
When can the heartbeat be reliably seen on an ultrasound scan?
By the 6th week of pregnancy, there is often a good chance of seeing the tiny heart as a flickering point on the ultrasound scan. However, some patience may still be required if the scan takes place early in the week. If implantation occurred slightly later, the heartbeat may only become clearly visible in the 7th week of pregnancy.
What can I do about the constant urge to urinate?
It is important not to reduce your fluid intake, as your body needs sufficient hydration for the amniotic fluid and increased blood volume. Instead, try to distribute your fluid intake evenly throughout the day and drink slightly less before bedtime to reduce night-time interruptions.
Why do I suddenly have unusual food cravings or aversions?
Your body often instinctively responds to what it needs or what it may wish to avoid. Sudden aversions to coffee, meat or alcohol can act as a natural protective mechanism. Cravings for foods such as pickled gherkins or unusual combinations are usually harmless, provided your overall diet remains balanced.
Is vaginal discharge normal in the 6th week of pregnancy?
An increase in pale or milky discharge is common at this stage. It is caused by increased blood flow to the vaginal lining and helps protect against bacteria. As long as the discharge is odourless and not accompanied by itching, it is usually not a cause for concern.
Can I still fly during the 6th week of pregnancy?
In general, flying during early pregnancy is considered safe if the pregnancy is uncomplicated. However, as the 6th week falls within a sensitive phase of organ development, many women prefer to keep travel brief and avoid unnecessary stress. It is advisable to discuss any travel plans with your gynaecologist, particularly for long-haul flights.
